Refrigerator and stove are included. A Brief History of this Home Built in 1865, this house was part of a large estate owned by a wealthy American hotelman. The estate sat on approximately 20-30 acres of land. The main estate building was to the east of this house; barns and workshops were west of the house. Obviously there were no other residencies on the property (i.e. what you see today). This house was the caretaker’s residence and was deeded to him by the owner. Fast forwarding to 1974-1975 when my wife and I purchased the house from a Gananoque born interior-decorator residing in Boston. At that time the driveway entrance was where it exists today, however the driveway ran straight down to a single car garage which sat just beyond the tree in front of the patio door and just beyond the pump-handle well. The trees on either side of the sidewalk and the one in the backyard were planted by us. The well was our water supply for years. To the west of the garage to our west property line was an open field which ran down to the 20’ of shoreline which was ours. Within the home I direct your attention to the picture of the back porch taken shortly after we moved in. My two eldest boys are pictured there but I direct your attention to two things, the white pillars, and if you look carefully at the end of the porch it appears to be blocked off by a wall, which in truth it was. The wall is part of a two-storey workshop which ran about 40’ south. The bottom floor contained a forge, a small furnace, and some tools. Stairs led upstairs to a beautifully crafted workshop with 1 ½ tongue and groove wood floor to ceiling, a work table, part of which is in the garage now. At some point this area became the production center for a craftsman who built St. Lawrence River Skiffs. At the end of the second floor were floor to ceiling doors through which the Skiffs would be slid down a ramp and hauled down to the river to be launched. My wife and I hoped to convert the upper floor into bedrooms for our boys but the lower base of the building was not stable enough in the opinion of our contractor. There was also a small smokehouse at the end of the workshop and all of that stone is in the fireplace and the mantelpiece. Soon we were expecting our next child. The baby was due in August and the spring was already sweltering. My wife was already uncomfortable so, long story short, we put on the family room, put up the two-car garage, and put in a 20’ x 40’ in-ground pool which is now a salt-water pool with a new liner which is three years old. The pillars – aforementioned on the back porch - are the ones you now see in the family room. My family loved this house and still do. It is not for everyone, but its history is something you do not have with your average Tamarack house.
